Mark Tomlinson: The Start of My Tech Journey
My passion for computing began in the school computer lab, where I was surrounded by cassette drives and the glow of CRT monitors. It all started with iconic machines like the Commodore PET, VIC-20, Sharp MX485, Commodore 64, ZX81, and ZX Spectrum, each opening new doors into the digital world.
By 1998, I owned a PC tower— a Daewoo from Comet. It served me well for nine months before it broke down. A technician diagnosed a motherboard issue, but after a brief phone call, he packed up his tools, stating it wasn't covered under warranty.
Refusing to give up, I visited a local computer shop. The owner, Adam, listened to my concerns and suggested a bold solution: I would purchase the necessary parts, and he would guide me through the installation and configuration process. Excited to learn, I agreed.
As we worked together, Adam noticed my eagerness and quick understanding. Before I left, he made an unexpected offer: "Come back Saturday." To my surprise, that weekend, he invited me to join his team and repair computers alongside him.
That moment marked the true beginning of my hands-on journey into the world of technology.
For over 25 years, I've built a wealth of expertise in information technology, spanning a wide range of systems from computer hardware and complex networks to security solutions, digital communications, and embedded technologies. I've had the privilege of working with some of the world's leading organizations, including Rolls Royce, Bentley, NHS South Yorkshire, Merseyside Police, the London Stock Exchange, financial institutions, local councils, the Ministry of Defence, advertising agencies, and the petrochemical and nuclear sectors.
Throughout my career, I've undertaken high-profile projects such as building and imaging computers for the House of Parliament and Swedish royalty, designing bespoke systems for the House of Lords and Buckingham Palace, and delivering and installing 50 servers for former Prime Minister Theresa May.
I also provide low-cost repairs with upfront pricing. I pride myself on using genuine parts and genuine software to ensure that every system I work on remains reliable and performs at its best.
Every project has presented unique challenges and opportunities for innovation, and solving complex problems continues to fuel my passion. Whether it's a single workstation or an entire digital infrastructure, I'm committed to optimizing systems for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
Technology isn't just my job—it's my passion, my craft, and an essential part of my life. From the foundational ones and zeros to the most advanced systems, I remain dedicated to mastering and advancing the field.
